5 SUPPLEMENTS EVERY WOMAN NEEDS

 By Purvaja Sawant

Just following a nutritious diet and hitting the gym regularly isn’t enough to remain fit and healthy. Women, especially, require certain health supplements to take care of their bodies. We list down the most essential ones, which you should consider, with the consent of your general physician.

Calcium: One of the most important supplements for women, calcium is necessary for good bone health and to prevent diseases like osteoporosis. As a woman gets older, the bone mass in her body gets weaker and requires calcium to sustain. Since the calcium content in dairy products isn’t enough, women under the ages of 50 should consume a supplement with 500 mg of calcium and those over 50 years of age, should aim for a supplement with 800-1000 mgs of calcium.

Omega-3 Fish Oil: Fish oil contains fats that our body can’t produce. It lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases and enhances cognitive functions. If you don’t eat fish, it’s advisable to take 1 gm per day.

Iron: Lack of iron in your body can lead to anemia, fatigue and decreased immunity levels. If you have donated blood and been told that your iron levels are low, along with iron-rich foods, you must take iron supplements prescribed by your doctor.

Co-enzyme Q10: This is an antioxidant that is usually found in a lot of cosmetics. It helps against premature ageing, boosts your energy levels and is important for maintaining good heart health.

Vitamin D: Most women use sunscreen lotions to prevent damage from the sun’s rays but in the bargain, they don’t get enough Vitamin D in their body. Since Vitamin D helps in preventing certain types of cancer, it should be a part of your daily intake. Without it, you can’t even process the calcium in your body.

Vitamin E: Another supplement that is usually an ingredient in beauty products and lotions, it helps in the development of red blood cells and maintains cell membranes. Sunflower seeds and wheat germ are foods rich in this vitamin and should be consumed regularly.
